LOW-TOX LIVING: BABY EDITION

Furnishing the Nursery, Without the Guesswork

An ideal pick and a more affordable pick for every category, sorted by age. Non-toxic first, always, and a real, honest step-up option for wherever your budget actually is right now.

You don't need every top-tier item to do this well. You need to know what to avoid, and one real option at whatever price point meets you where you are. That's what this page is. Tap any card to see both.

NEWBORN & INFANT

What They Need First

Avoid: BPA and BPS plastics, PVC nipples, and painted or decorated glass, since the paint on the outside can carry lead even when the glass itself is clean.

IDEAL

Evenflo Classic Glass

Clear, unpainted glass, independently tested lead-free. At $3 to $5 a bottle, this is genuinely the best value in the whole guide, not just the safest.

AFFORDABLE

Comotomo Silicone

100% food-grade silicone body and nipple, no glass to break, good for daycare or travel when glass isn't practical.

One thing to know: independent testing has found lead in the exterior paint on some painted glass bottles, including a few units of a well-known brand. Clear, unpainted glass sidesteps the issue entirely.

Avoid: PVC, added phthalates, and artificial coloring.

IDEAL

Natursutten or Hevea

One-piece natural rubber, no seams for residue to hide in, and no separate parts made of unknown plastics.

AFFORDABLE

MAM Silicone

100% silicone, widely available, and a fine choice if a natural rubber allergy is a concern in your family.

Avoid: Unverified 'food-grade silicone' with no testing behind it, and anything with a painted or printed coating on the part that goes in their mouth.

IDEAL

ezpz or Kidsme

Both have been independently lab-tested and came back clean for lead and arsenic, which is more than most silicone brands can say.

AFFORDABLE

Bumkins

Also independently tested, with trace cadmium at a level considered safe by U.S. and international standards. A real step up from unlabeled dollar-store silicone.

Worth knowing: trace cadmium shows up in most silicone products across most brands when tested. It's an industry-wide silicone issue, not one bad brand, so I'm not going to promise any silicone product is completely free of it.

Avoid: Painted toys with no finish disclosed, and soft plastic teethers with no phthalate testing behind them.

IDEAL

Untreated wood

Solid, untreated or naturally oil-finished wooden toys have nothing to off-gas and nothing to shed. This is the simplest swap in the whole guide.

AFFORDABLE

Plain silicone teethers

When wood isn't practical (teething), a single-material silicone teether from a brand that publishes lab testing is the next best thing.

TODDLERHOOD

As They Grow

Avoid: Sodium lauryl or laureth sulfate, synthetic fragrance or parfum, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives like quaternium-15 or DMDM hydantoin.

IDEAL

ATTITUDE Baby Wash

Carries the EWG Verified mark, a real independent certification, not just a label claim.

AFFORDABLE

Puracy Baby

Independently rated low-hazard on EWG's Skin Deep database. A genuine step up from a mainstream baby wash, even though it isn't fully fragrance-free.

Avoid: BPA, BPS, and PVC, all common in mainstream plastic sippy cups.

IDEAL

Pura Kiki Stainless

Food-grade stainless steel with a medical-grade silicone spout, no plastic lining anywhere. Carries a real MADE SAFE certification.

AFFORDABLE

A basic stainless kids cup

Any straightforward stainless cup with a silicone lid does the job. Intentionally not naming a specific budget brand here yet, still checking on one.

A caution, not a recommendation: Green Sprouts had an actual 2022 recall on stainless bottles for unsafe lead levels. Not comfortable pointing to them as a budget pick without a fresh, product-specific retest confirming it's resolved.

Avoid: Anything marketed as 'stain-proof,' 'waterproof,' or 'easy-wipe' fabric without the coating disclosed, since that's the single most common place PFAS hides in a bib.

IDEAL

Single-material silicone bibs

No fabric, no coating, nothing to disclose because there's nothing there to hide. ezpz and Bumkins both make a silicone catch-all bib.

AFFORDABLE

Plain organic cotton, uncoated

A simple cotton bib with no printed waterproofing claim. It won't catch food the way silicone does, but it has nothing to worry about either.

Avoid: Added fragrance, dye, and lotion coatings, the same red flags as diapers and wipes.

IDEAL

Organic cotton training pants

Plain, undyed organic cotton against the skin during a season with a lot of accidents and a lot of contact time.

AFFORDABLE

Fragrance-free mainstream training pants

If organic cotton isn't in the budget, fragrance-free alone is still a real, meaningful swap from a scented mainstream brand.

Avoid: Scented cleaning wipes and sprays used around the potty itself, since that's right at nose and hand height for a toddler.

IDEAL

A simple stainless or BPA-free potty

Keep the potty itself simple. The bigger swap here is what you clean it with, not the potty.

AFFORDABLE

Any basic training potty, cleaned right

Almost any potty works fine. Clean it with something fragrance-free instead of a scented bathroom spray.

Cleaning Around the Potty

The potty itself matters less than what you clean it with. I use TrulyFree for this exact reason, fragrance-free and nowhere near as harsh as a bathroom spray.

Nothing on this page is medical advice. Bring anything new to your baby's pediatrician, especially in the first year. Brand names change formulas and testing over time, so treat this as a starting point for your own label-reading, not a permanent list.
